Brad Gates Catering- Revisit

If you’ve been reading my blog for a while, you know I am a fan of Brad Gates from way back to Puck’s and Euphoria days (gosh, I bet many of you don’t even remember those places). Anyhow, Chef Gates has a lunch spot in the City Market, serving quick serve type items and to go things, but he also runs a successful catering business. And he is my go to whenever I need a party catered.

My favorite way to get food from him is to have him do lots of little bites. You know I like a good tapas style meal. So when we had a last minute going away party for some friends, I was thrilled they were available. Here’s a quick rundown of what we ate.

First were wild mushroom shumai with scallion dipping sauce. These were so good. Also vegetarian. I kept going back for more of that sauce to pour all over them. The mushrooms kept the dumplings nice and moist.

I loved the twice-baked fingerlings he does, and I love that everyone likes them. Think of little teeny potatoes stuffed with bacon, chives and cheddar and drizzled with crème fraiche.

The chilied salmon nachos with avocado crème fraiche and pico di gallo are also a perennial favorite in our house, and have been a recurring order whenever we have Brad cater. Another re-order, and something I used to even order at Euphoria was the sweet potato gnocchi with slow-braised Gunthrop Farms pork, Brussels sprouts and Parmesan. We love this one and saved some of the leftovers for a nice meal the next day. Even the kids love this dish.

We had a mixed group, so we wanted some items that were easily recognizable to people as well—so there were lump crab cakes with chives and honey remoulade as well as roasted Italian meatballs topped with a light San Marzano marinara sauce. And you can’t beat the service method for the meatballs—they were on a stick. Made ‘em easy to eat at a party where everyone was milling around.
gnocchi with pork

There was also some crostini with goat cheese, roasted pepper and pine nuts—ok I can’t speak to this one because I was too busy hitting the big money items, but people seemed to enjoy them as well.

Gates Catering is a great chef-driven caterer. I have enjoyed many sit down meals from here as well, but my favorite way is always the small plates.

Mambo's Cheesesteak Grill (City Market)- Breakfast

The other day I met my book club at the City Market for brunch. It was Saturday and I was really hoping to partake in that really amazing sounding brunch menu I had seen from Circle City Soups. Sadly for me, they weren’t open this particular Saturday and apparently 3 days in Paris was very backlogged with a staffing problem. So as I stood next to Circle City Soups, thinking about that BLT on their most amazing croissant, I noticed the place next door (Mambo’s Cheese Steak Grill) was open and making breakfast, and they even had a croissant sandwich as well. So I went for it. Apparently this place is pretty brand new.

The people there were very nice and efficient and made my food just as I ordered it—I wanted my egg runny and they did it runny, it was topped with bacon and cheese and I got a side of the breakfast potatoes ($6.50). They were thinly sliced potatoes cooked on the flattop and seasoned with a seasoning salt. I asked them to cook them extra crisp—they did leave them on longer and they were crisper than one of my friend’s, but I wished for even more. But you know, overall it was a decent breakfast sandwich. The croissant was solid (no Circle City Sweets croissant, but really, how many are?), and the egg was perfect. The bacon was so so, but the overall sandwich hit the spot. I do wish they served their food in something other than styrofoam--I hate that stuff for so many reasons.

And as I waited for my food, I noticed some of their more interesting sounding takes on a cheese steak—they have several different Latin versions that I would like to try—for instance, one called the Chivito, which includes grilled steak, bacon, ham, fried egg, mozzarella cheese and is topped with lettuce, tomatoes, and Aji (cilantro, jalapenos, garlic and olive oil sauce). And there’s a lomo sandwich with Peruvian flavors—grilled steak, onions, tomatoes, cilantro and fries and more of the Aji sauce. This is a take on a Peruvian dish that I have had several times at Peruvian places and really liked. I am really anxious to try it.

I know it’s new, but anyone else been and had one of their non-breakfast sandwiches?

City Market: Tamale Place, Mauricio's and Circle City Soups

This post is a little different because I am going to touch on several different spots all within the City Market. I get excited every time I go in there these days, because there are so many good options of places to eat. When I think back to just 7-8 years ago when we first moved back to Indy, the change is so dramatic and exciting.

The first lunch with a friend, I had nachos ($7.49) from the Tamale Place and he had a slice of pizza and a salad from Mauricio’s Pizza ($6.75). You guys had all recommended the nachos, and they were pretty decadent for sure. I had the spicy chipotle chicken version, because I had had it before in a taco and enjoyed it. It has a nice little kick to it. It’s layered with queso, shredded cheese, the chicken and lettuce on top. I got some stuff to dip into (salsa, guac and sour cream because I was being indecisive). I enjoyed it, but wished I had some extra chips because it was so gooey pretty quick and the chips underneath got kind of soggy. Honestly, while the flavors were good, I think I prefer the tacos just because they’re a little easier to handle. I’d probably skip the lettuce next time too.

I have had a couple bites of the pizza from Mauricio’s on various occasions—and I think it is pretty decent New York style pizza. It’s thin crust that they heat up in the pizza ovens before they serve it. This one was mushroom, which is one of my favorite pizza toppings and I would happily eat it again. It’s a nice crispy crust and has the right amount of toppings so that it doesn’t get soggy. They have a decent looking deep-dish style as well. Anyone tried that one? It’s certainly one of the fastest places at the Market I think--good to remember if you’re in a hurry.

The following week I went back to meet another friend for lunch. It’s becoming one of my new go to because there are just so many different things to suit whatever mood you’re in. This friend hadn’t been to the market and several years and was pretty blown away. This time I was lured in by the Taste of the NFL award-winning sandwich offered at Circle City Soups. I had the mini version at the competition, but the lunch one is even more decadent with a full sized croissant from Circle City Sweets, bacon, a runny fried egg, arugula, romesco sauce and pepper jack cheese. First of all, that croissant you guys. One of the best I’ve had for sure—and definitely my favorite it Indy. So buttery and moist with just the exact right amount of flakiness. And the toppings go beyond your typical blt with the red pepper based romesco sauce. Also, the sandwich is warm and the cheese is nice and melted. Honestly, eating the sandwich, you just sort of felt like the whole thing kind of melted in your mouth. This is a sandwich worth splurging on. Not your typical BLT for sure, and really delicious.

Of course, these are just a few of so many great choices. I’m looking forward to returning to Spice Box and The Pantry soon, just to name a few. So tell me what your favorites are.

The Tamale Place

I had a meeting at the City Market at lunchtime, so I was excited to try something new. I often fall back on The Pantry, but this time I went with some of your suggestions and decided to try the Tamale Place (they have another location on Rockville Road as well).

It seems that most people tell me to get tacos at the Tamale Place, which I did, but I felt obligated to try one of the tamales as well. I mean, it is their name right? They have these little “tamale sliders” which are just mini tamales. Seemed like a good compromise. I had a spicy pork and cheese slider ($1.75) and a spicy chicken taco ($2.99). The lady at the register told me it was one of the most popular.

Well, I really liked the taco. So all of you who had been telling me to try them were right. The chicken was marinated and had a smoky chipotle flavor and was very tender. They give you a ton of meat to corn tortilla ratio though, so after a couple of bites, and the fact that I was wearing a white shirt, I moved on to knife and fork. It was topped with fresh cilantro and diced onions, giving it some fresh crunch and extra flavor. I had the mild salsa along with it, which was tasty for seasoning and a little extra moisture. I also used a bit of sour cream and guac with it (you can get 2 oz sides for  $.25 and $.80 respectively). I had the spicy guac and it had a fair amount of jalapeno in it. It was fresh and tasty.

The truth is, with tamales, I have never had one that really sticks out in my mind as being really amazing. I just don’t think they are totally my thing. This one was fine as far as they go—it had a lot of pork and cheese mixed in with the masa, but just no real hook for me. A little sour cream was nice with it. Maybe it’s the uniform texture or something, but I would stick to tacos here. And I would definitely go back for some more tacos. I would like to try all the flavors. So tell me, which ones are your favorites?

12 Chefs of Christmas Ticket Giveaway!

****HEY EVERYONE, I have picked my winner. Congrats to Patrick Wright! And thanks to everyone who left me a comment. I hope to see you next Saturday!***********

___________________________________________________________________________

I don't do these things very often, but every once in awhile an event comes along that I am excited about--so if I happen to get a couple of tickets to give away, I am going to do it. Brad Gates Catering and Flat 12 Bierwerks got together with a bunch of local chefs and producers to make this event happen to benefit the City Market on Saturday, December 15th from 7:00-10:00 pm.

I love the idea of the event because as you guys probably know, I am not overly knowledgeable about beer and this seems like a fun way to try a bunch of different beers that have been paired with food. Of course, if you actually know something about beer, I assume this is going to be a fun event for you too because I'm pretty sure these chefs know what they are doing.

A couple of sample menu items are things like duck breast pancetta over white beans and stone spice from Chef Craig Baker of the Local paired with White Beard Wit; a great sounding goose confit from Regina Mehallick of R Bistro paired with Chestnuts Roasting Brown Ale; and Brad Gates is doing scallops over a salad of cod cheeks, Goose bacon, and Eden Farms lettuces paired with Glazed Ham Porter. There are a bunch of other great chefs participating as well (check it out below) and there will be live music.

If you would like to win 2 free tickets, leave a comment on this post and around 1:00 p.m. tomorrow (Wednesday the 5th), I will choose a random person to win (tickets to be picked up the night of the event). I will post the winner in the comments below tomorrow afternoon (and you'll have to give me your name and phone number to give to the event coordinators). So be sure and check back (if I don't hear back from the winner in 24 hours, I will do another random draw).

Also, if you want to buy tickets, they are on sale at each participating restaurant, by
phone at 317/445-0105 or online at www.brownpapertickets.com/event/293079 .

I look forward to seeing you there!

City Market Dinner

This isn’t exactly my regular type of post, but I wanted to let you all in on something I have been working on for the last couple of months—an idea from Brad Gates that we talked about back in February when he was dropping off our annual Valentine’s Day dinner.  This past Saturday, I helped to organize what I hope with be the first of many market dinners at the City Market downtown.

We kept it fairly small for the initial attempt. I invited several people I know and several of you I feel like I know through the blog.  There were about 30 of us and we sat upstairs at large tables at the market and enjoyed food from Brad Gates Catering, Circle City Soups and Sweets, Fermenti Artisan, and pastry chef Pete Schmutte.

Photos courtesy of Brown Sugar Meatloaf

I love the fact that we got to sit in an historic Indianapolis building eating local seasonal food prepared by market chefs—and we tried to keep the price reasonable at $45 per person.  We wanted the dinner to be accessible to lots of people in terms of price and formality.  I think people genuinely enjoyed themselves and it was great to interact with both old and new friends.

Dinner started with cheese and various pickled veggies.  The next course was homemade beet pasta with housemade salmon pastrami and a fennel cream sauce. The main course was bison medallions topped with cabbage, favas, pea shoots and a Vidallia onion demi glace and a baby root vegetable pot pie topped with Capriole farms goat cheese. Dessert was a lovely chocolate namelaka with passion fruit ganache (with lots more to it). The dessert was almost too pretty to eat.  Almost.  We were also treated to a plate of various flavors of macaroons and even more cheese.

The dinner was even better than I hoped for food-wise, the setting completely casual, and it was great to bring various Indy food loving people together over a meal.  I know the market vendors hope to make these types of dinners recurring events and that is why I am doing this post.  I want to help them compile an email list for future dinners of anyone who might be interested in attending that I can pass along to them (and also for purely selfish reasons—I want to attend more of them myself!)  When they’re announced, the menu and the price are set (and payment is made in advance).  If you are interested in being included in the mailing list for future dinners, please leave me your contact information in a comment below (or if you were there, let me know what you thought about it) or email me at erininindy@gmail.com.  I can’t wait for the next one and I can’t wait to meet more of you!

***Special thanks to Brown Sugar Meatloaf for having the good sense to take some proper photos (I took a couple, but hers are so much prettier).  The photos here are her work.

Papa Roux - City Market

Continuing in my quest to try new things at the City Market, on this particular day we got a catfish po boy from Papa Roux.  I have reviewed them before at their main location, and hubby and I had both quite enjoyed it.  The menu at the City Market is more limited (no shrimp po boy, boo!), but ultimately that was good because it forced me to try something new this time.

We got the catfish po boy with a side of the mushroom étouffée ($10.50).  I like the way you get a side included with every sandwich (not that you will be needed more food, but nice to get to try something else).  The thing I really like about Papa Roux sandwiches is the combination of flavors you get from your filling, the “vouxdoux” mayo and the cole slaw.  Especially the mayo.  It has a nice tangy flavor to it with just a little bit of heat and some nice spiciness (think like Old Bay seasoning).  Although the dressing of the cole slaw is probably part of the tanginess—there’s some vinegar to it.  The catfish itself is pan fried and was pretty juicy.  Although, just one filet seemed a little small for the huge bun.  I mean, it reached end to end, but the ratio of meat to bread was a little off.

Which brings me to the part of the sandwich I didn’t particularly like—the bread.  Not that it tasted bad, but the bun was so thick, I felt like if you ate it together, you could barely taste anything but the bread.  We figured out a solution and just took the top bun off and folded the bottom one around the fish.  This was a much better ratio although made us miss out on a lot of the dressing and slaw (we scraped it off the top bun and added it to the part we ate as much as possible).

The mushroom étouffée was a little too bland for us—honestly, I think there were one or two mushrooms in there and a sort of cheesy sauce and rice.  But what was missing was flavor.  If I had some hot sauce (we were already upstairs at this point) I would have doctored it up…but I wouldn’t get this particular side again. Hubby really wished we had stuck with beans and rice.

I do like the flavor combinations on the po boys at papa roux—I have yet to try one of the more Hoosier-style ones (pork tenderloin etc) but I would be interested to hear what you guys like.  And it won’t be long until I have eaten everywhere at the City Market (a girl’s gotta have goals).

Brad Gates Catering- City Market

The City Market just keeps getting better and better if you ask me.  I love what it is turning into, and I love that you can go even on a Saturday and have lots of great lunch options.  My daughter and I spend many Saturday lunches there and often when I have something going on downtown during the week, I just stop in myself and grab something.  The last couple of times I have been there, I had the opportunity to try one of the newer vendors—Brad Gates Catering.  I am very happy to have an outlet to get his food other than having him make it at my house (which is good too, but this way is much more economical).  He also has a great cheese selection if you are looking for stuff more interesting than what you can get at the grocery.

His menus change daily and some things are in the rotation frequently and others less so. (I regularly check his daily menus on facebook.)  The first time I went in, I was intrigued by the linguine with asparagus and Laughing Bird shrimp scampi ($12).  Pasta is a big lunch for me, but it sounded good and I knew hubby would eat the rest later (which he did).  It was really tasty—lots of slices of garlic and asparagus pieces that were just about the same size as the shrimp and it had plenty of fresh parmesan too.  It was fairly simple, but well done—the shrimp are smallish and sweet and were cooked just right.
The next trip, he had fried chicken ($10). So, well, duh, that was a no brainer for me.  I certainly wasn’t passing that up.  He gives quite a generous portion for lunch. There was a thigh, a leg and a breast/wing combo that I really liked because he had taken out most of the bone.  The chicken was buttermilk marinated giving it a nice tangy flavor under the crust and the breast meat was sort of shockingly juicy.  I love fried chicken breasts done well, but it is almost always dry, so I usually only eat the dark meat, but I think this breast was even better than the dark pieces.  The skin was nicely seasoned and crispy and I really liked the coarse grits served alongside—I am normally a person who nearly always gets mashed potatoes with fried chicken when given the option, but this was a nice variation because of their texture.  There were also collard greens under the chicken with some big hunks of pork—they were good too, although honestly, I was a little more fixated on the chicken. And that was a ton of food for me for lunch.
One of the things I love about the City Market these days is the variety of food you can get there, and Brad’s goes even further offering different options each day which opens up even more possibilities. I have seen many daily specials on the facebook page that I would like to try.  So have you guys been yet? What have you had?

Grecian Garden--City Market

Thanks to everyone who has recommended their favorite City Market lunch spot to me either here, or via email.  I really do pay attention—and based on one reader’s advice, this week I decided to check out the Grecian Garden.  The spinach pie (or spanikopita) was recommended, and I love a good spanikopita.
First, I will say just how friendly the staff at the Grecian Garden were—they were quick and answered all my questions. After perusing, I went with my gut and got the spinach pie ($4.95)“for here” and after a quick moment while they heated it, I took it upstairs to eat.
As for the food, you know, it was pretty good. I love phyllo and this was a nice sized piece of spinach pie with lots of phyllo.  If I had my preference, I probably would have had them heat it just a little bit longer, because I like it really crunchy.  But with that being said, there was a nice ratio of dough to filling, and the filling-- sautéed spinach, onions and bits of feta scattered throughout were good.  I am sure it would be a really nice change of pace from your average burger or sandwich for a quick work lunch out.  So if I was a regular at the City Market, I would probably ask them to heat it a bit longer and make it a regular on my lunch rotation.
Separate from my specific Grecian Garden experience, I have a couple of pet peeves about the City Market though.  The first is that it seems nearly everyone (ok, not the crepe place) serves their food in Styrofoam to go containers, no matter whether you order it to eat there in the market or “to go.”  I mean, what is the point of asking if you want it “for here” if you are going to serve it “to go” anyway?  I hate those containers and really wish more of the vendors made an effort to become more eco friendly in this regard.  Offer plates that are biodegradable at least… and lots of other places offer less toxic alternatives for to go items than these.  Plus, I really hate eating out of them.
My other pet peeve? How come when you go to the City market website, you cannot find any information on the actual restaurants that are there?  (unless I am totally blind or something).  You can find out about the farmers market, and how to host a private event, and even where to drink, but there is nothing about where to eat.  Seriously, the majority of our market is made up of restaurants, I would think they would play that up and let us be able to do a little research and see what’s there.  An out of town visitor would have no idea what to expect out of the market by looking at its web presence.
Ok, enough ranting… please keep the suggestions coming about the market (or general downtown suggestions)…I am still down there about once a week and am always looking for something new…

3 Days in Paris

I was downtown the other day at lunchtime and it was beautiful so I decided to take a walk to the City Market and see what was going on as I hadn’t been in quite awhile.  I spotted the 3 Days in Paris stand right away and was of course interested.  I also instantly spotted the yolk crepe ($4.50) and decided that was what I wanted. I love an egg in a crepe.
Once you place your order, they get to work making it right there in front of you. It is sort of fun to watch.  I was a little sad when I watched my egg being scrambled right on top of the crepe (I was expecting a sunny side up egg with a name like “Yolk).  Normally this crepe only comes with cheese with the egg, but I added mushrooms and they were very accommodating.  Anyway, after watching my egg being scrambled, they mixed the cheese (I chose Havarti) and mushrooms together and added them to the crepe until they were nice and melty.
Ultimately, though, it was just a thin layer of egg, which still imparted a nice egg flavor, but didn’t give me the satisfactory runny egg consistency that I like (next time I would ask if they can do it the other way, although with as quickly as they cook them, I wonder).  The crepe itself was made with the darker buckwheat flour that I like—it was somewhat dense but honestly, I enjoyed the flavor of all of it together. If I had my ideal crepe, it would be a little thinner and crisper, but you know, the way these were were probably more filling for a lunch on their own.
They wrap up the whole thing so that you could carry it and eat it on the go I guess, but they will also give you a plate if you like (I do). I am not a walk and eat kind of person, so I grabbed a plate and a knife and fork and took it upstairs to eat.  I like the obviously fresh made quality of the crepes, and I was excited to see all the variety of options going on at the City Market in general.  I ran into friends who work nearby and recommended several other places to try.  I will certainly be back to check out some of the others, but as always, would appreciate your feedback if you frequent the market and can make suggestions.

After my lunch, I was in the mood for something a little sweet (as I nearly always am after a meal) and grabbed (well I did pay for it, it was $1) just one little chocolate from the Amuse Bouche chocolate cart right near the crepe cart.  I had the salted caramel.  It was delicious.  I love a local product like this, and it had a super creamy caramel center—not the chewy stick to your teeth type of caramel -- and a couple of salt crystals on top of the chocolate.  I would certainly love to try an entire box of these chocolates….
Anyway, don’t forget to send me your suggestions for where you like to eat at the City Market, and what is good where. I plan on making some return visits soon!
