Top 50 List?

Since everyone was talking about the Indy Star's 50 "Top Restaurants" List yesterday on twitter, on request (thanks @zigged for the idea) I have decided to post links to my posts about the ones I have been to (I have been to 43 of them, although I may not have reviewd them all).  So if you want to know what I think about a lot of these, click on the restaurant names below. I have to say I vehemently disagree with several of the choices and feel like there are some major omissions (uh, Oakley's comes to mind).  But mainly, I want to hear what you think. Do you agree with the list? Which were ones that shouldn't have been included and what are some that were left off that shouldn't have been? I would love it if you post your thoughts in the comments below so others can see them too... (I love your twitter responses, but not everyone will see them.)

And in the meantime I will be mulling over what my top list would be....

  1. At least they didn't include Acapulco Joe's.

  2. Went last night to Oakley's for my anniversary, and I wholeheartedly agree with you - it's one of the best restaurants I've been to in Indy (I've been to 20 on the list) and I think it's even up there with Recess. How did Hollyhock Hill get on this list, though?! I think several on the list are only there because they give Indy residents that feel good, nostalgic feeling. Jazz Kitchen has a good vibe, but their food mostly was not good, definitely nothing special. Also, Siam Square should rank above many of these as well.

  3. Kim, yeah I think Oakley's was a big miss. And I agree, I don't know how Hollyhock Hill stays on these lists.

  4. I think I've said it before here... you should give The Legend a try. It's top five in Indy in my book, not because it will blow you away with culinary masterpieces, but because what they do, they do really well. Plus, it has what I think I Indy misses most on the restaurant scene, more of a neighborhood restaurant and bar feel. It's not trying to be something it's not, which is why people keep coming back to it!

  5. I've been to 33 of these but felt this list was a joke. How can Zest (a.k.a. Mama Carrolla's overflow) be on the list and not Mama Carrolla's? Seriously, I tried to like Zest, I really did, but never once did I have a good meal or remotely decent service. Corner Wine Bar? Hollyhock Hill? Really? There were some really big misses too, and Oakleys is at the top of the miss list. Would love to know who these "experts" are. I don't think they like food!

  7. Alcapulco Joes is one of my favorite places in Indy. Yes, you feel awful after eating there, but from the stale chips to the squeeze bottle hot sauce to the stringy cheese dip, this place hits on all cylinders.
