96th Street Steakburgers - Revisit

****THIS RESTAURANT IS NOW CLOSED****
96th Street Steakburgers is a quick place that our whole family can agree on. It’s borderline fast food, but about as close as I get on a semi-regular basis. They do cook the food to order and even the French fries are fresh.

I haven’t written about it in a few years (holy moly does time fly) and since it is a fairly regular spot for us, I figured I’d do a quick revisit. The burgers are tasty—my favorite part being the special sauce they use. It’s got a little bit of tanginess to it and gives some extra depth to the burger. I get mine with cheese pickles and the sauce—hubby usually adds lettuce and grilled onions. Both options are tasty. It’s a fairly thin burger, and they cook them all the same, but the maintain a fairly juicy inside and have some crispy edges. The burgers are around $4 for a single and around $6 if you make it a combo with a drink and fries.

Like I said, the fries are freshly cut and cooked—they can vary slightly in how crispy they are, but they have a good flavor. I love it when they’re really crisp, and the last couple of times they have been. Sometimes they can be a bit greasy though. The portions are generous with the fries (our family of four usually splits two orders). My daughter loves the milkshakes (around $3) and usually gets the chocolate.

Anyhow, it’s a good place to get a quick bite at what is basically an independently owned fast food joint. You don’t see too many of those.  The service (counter service) can be a little gruff at times, but they’re quite fast. The place never seems very crowded though. Whenever I go I wonder how they maintain such a big place on the amount of business they have.

What do you guys think of it?

  1. Crazy timing ... I just met my husband there for lunch yesterday. It was one of those places we used to frequent, and then just stopped going for awhile. We both walked away feeling like it wasn't as good as we remembered. My first thought going in was, "Whoa, what happened to the menu?" It used to be much smaller, and now there are several different styles of burgers, as well as more sandwiches and salads. (We chuckled at the offering of a kale salad ... I can't imagine lots of people get a hankering for a burger and then decide, "You know what? It's kale I really want!")

Instead of getting my usual, which is similar to what you get, I ordered my burger peanut butter style. I love the Shewman from Scotty's and was hoping it would be a cheaper version of that. Unfortunately it was just a plain cheeseburger with some bacon and a big schmear of crunchy peanut butter. It definitely needs some other kind of sauce and some kick, either from jalepenos or pepper jack cheese.

Our other issue was that we got a limp, greasy basket of fries. You're right, if they're not crisp, they're no good. That being said, I still like that it's an affordable, local, kid-friendly option not far from our house. It won't keep us from going back, but I'll stick to the tried-and-true burger.

  2. I really like this place and wish we lived closer. It's been a while since we've been in - they didn't have the "peanut butter" style the last time we were there, though they did have bacon blue cheese and some others. The chocolate milkshake is one of the best I've ever had - it has a marshmallow quality to it - just really, really good. I feel the same way you do about the crowds (or lack of.) Maybe we're just missing their busy times?

  3. TBH even Punch Burger has a bigger flair and foodie following these days, and there's only one in Indy right now! The big thing with this place tbh is it's missing something special to draw in the crowd, Punch Burger is downtown so its a simple walk from work or the apartment, quick and fast food. 96th is very far away even from the suburbs and not what I'd call a place I'd make a 15 min car trip for fast food.
